Facts About Headie
Since inception of the awards in 2006, the Hip Hop World Awards plaque has become synonymous to artistic ingenuity and excellence. Winning the plaque has also become a career defining moment for many artistes.‘Headie’ is the name given to the Hip Hop World Awards gold plaque.
The Headie plaque represents the image and the shout of a young, vibrant man whose talent can challenge that of Nas, Mode 9, Kanye West, Sound Sultan and Jay Z combined but who has almost lost confidence in his abilities in the face of daunting odds presented by the Nigerian environment.

- The image of Headie was conceptualized by Ayo Animashaun and drawn by Matthias Aragbada.
- The first Headie plaque was done by Jide Adewoye.
- In 2008, Headie became 21k gold plated; produced in the UK after failed attempts to get the same quality locally.
- The present Headie plaque is a mixture of resin, copper, steel, marble and gold.
- Headie is sometimes referred to as Sound Sultan after the musician of the same name. The similarity was first mentioned by Mode 9 after winning a Headie plaque in 2006.
In 2006, the awards was hosted by Dare Art Alade at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.
